Before he was cussing out hockey refs and being parodied in Wayne’s World, Jim Schoenfeld was an up and coming star for the Buffalo Sabers with an album of lonely folk tunes under his belt. Approached by a Buffalo disc jockey after an interview where Schoenfeld mentioned he played guitar, Schony was cut over four days in February in a Buffalo studio with Jon Valby and issued on the January label in 1971.
It must have sold well enough, as a follow up was produced three years later. Regardless, neither generated enough revenue to eclipse his Sabers checks, and his music career ended shortly after. Thirty-five years later, we’re issuing “Before” on our upcoming Wayfaring Strangers: Lonesome Heroes compilation. Give it a listen:
Schony is currently the assistant general manager for the New York Rangers. He thought one of his old hockey pals was playing a prank when we first contacted him, tossing our letters in the trash and deleting our phone messages. Finally, through the incestuous world of hockey pros, our friend Gabe McDonough hooked it up.
Look for Lonesome Heroes at the end of August on CD or 2LP.
