Over all, putting together this Syl Johnson box set has been an extremely rewarding experience. That is, until I listened to the full version of Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” today just to hear Syl’s grunt. Tough listening, even with a Gary Coleman cameo.

One of the many appendices in the back of the book is an index of all the known (to us) samples from Syl’s work covered in the box set. Using Freddy Fresh’s RE:Sampling Dictionary and the great Who Sampled website, we managed to cull this list together:

Syl mentions being sampled by L’il Flip on “Money in My Pocket” on the Park West disc. No idea what song and what sample, but I’m sure Syl can readily supply that information.

J Dilla sampled it on the fan club 45 that came with either “The Shining” or “Donuts” – white vinyl, no label.
