Flashback to 1977. Lunchtime concerts in the courtyard near the Tribune building on Michigan Avenue. You work downtown, and you can make it to a few shows, but not every week. Which ones are you gonna pick? Bob Gibson is nearly rock bottom after a few decades of alcoholism. Yes, he discovered Joan Baez, but that’s not gonna keep him from showing up to a noontime show crusted over in hangover sweat. “Dooley Band” doesn’t sound too promising with their “swing” mixed into their rock and folk. “Ravenswood” is a nice neighborhood but, as a band name, it conjures a notion of a demo even the Flying Fish label would have (improbably) rejected. If you’re like us, you’d make the same selection that the former owner of this flyer did: La Juventud Tipica. Tipica cut a very little known salsa LP around the time of this concert that was promptly lost, despite their consistent appearances at salsa clubs around time and the urban fad for “spanish hustle” or “spanish boogie”. Unlike the rest of this Summer Concert Series, Tipica is destined for re-evaluation. Cactus Jack will have to wait for the inevitable boner revival.
