Syl Johnson – Back On The Radio
June 1, 2010, 12:52 pm

Syl Johnson and his music were fixtures on local radio back in the 60s and 70s here in Chicago. With E. Rodney Jones, the king of Chicago radio during much of Syl’s career, watching his back, few opportunities slipped by. However, the Clear Channel era of mundane radio has long since stripped such adventurous programming away and Syl could only stand a chance to be heard on the airwaves if had a knack for prank phonecalls. Thanks to Bob Abrahamian and his tireless efforts to put Chicago artists on the radio every week, Syl is back with a whole show dedicated to his work that you can check out here:

And, while you’re at it, check out some of the other interviews here: Sitting In The Park Archive

Wow …thank you to Mr. Abrahamian for putting one of my favorite singers Back on the radio….and one of my favorite people. Syl sings like an angel and is an angel to other musians and fans. When I got caught in the 1989 Earthquake in Frisco,,,,, He called me when my phone was going off and on and just to hear his voice made me want to do better. Sometimes when we spoke on the phone he would sing old lryics to me like….”Girl..You’re like a diamond in the rough..trying to get to you sure is tough!!!” Genius…underated…fabulous,,, and a humanitarian to boot. A great family man and loyal to his friends and fans….. and a spiritual person!!!! I love him… Jillina Arrigo-Pope aka the Original Blues Sister!!!!
