Syl Johnson descended on Brooklyn and Hoboken last weekend and brought the greater NYC area some of his finest performances in decades. We’d normally talk about the shows here but, the Village Voice gave such a thoughtful and engaging review of the Southpaw set, and Brooklyn Vegan has some stellar photos from Maxwell’s, that we’ll let them to do the talking on that front.
But we do have so many people to thank for making this such a successful weekend for Syl and Numero. First off thanks to Richard Lewis and Michael Robinson who put on the Dig Deeper shows. Their attention to detail and overall easy going nature in the chaos of putting on these concerts is beyond words.
JB Flatt who leads up the Divine Soul Rhythm Band & the Sweet Divines did an incredible job of writing damn near perfect charts and putting together a band that Syl said “I’d put you up against the Dap-Kings any day, and they some bad mutha’ fuckers!” Doug & Mike at the Southpaw along with Todd at Maxwell’s are both to be recoginzed for running two really great clubs that we hope you continue to support.
We also want to thank Yo La Tengo for helping out and letting us be a part of their legendary Hanukkah shows. And finally to everyone who came out and were as much a part of the shows as Syl was each night by giving him lots of love, we thank you.
