As of this morning we’ve sent off the design for the 2011 Numero No-Hitters set. We wanted to give you a little window into the process of making a 110 card set.

For the 2008 set, we leaned heavily on the late ’80s Donruss look. For 2011 we wanted to go back to a more classic style. The above is a generic take on the early ’80s Topps sets. Kinda sterile, way too clean.

For consistency, we tried adding a color bar to run through the set’s background, but encountered a pretty major problem when the cards were set in landscape.

Then came the ’87 Topps look. If you collected cards in the mid-’80s, you’ll remember how terrible this set was. Our look was still lacking in those little details that make a great set of cards, so we took it one step further.

This card leans heavy on Topps’ 1962 set (interesting how they recycled the flavor 25 years later on some kind of “anniversary” tip), but has modern flourishes throughout.

They should be packaged in about three weeks, watch this spot for ordering information.
