Numero Group: By The Numbers

Memphis Soul : “Don’t Down Me People”
January 4, 2012, 3:48 pm

When Buffalo natives and O’ Jays backing band Dyke and the Blazers became famously stranded in Phoenix by their employers in 1964, their decision to stay created an oasis of soul in the capital city’s otherwise sandy music scene. Memphis Soul would benefit directly from the Blazers’ indefinite layover, borrowing drummer Rodney Brown for a date at Audio Recorders on North Seventh Street in the late ’60s. Constructed around a sunburned guitar lick of prominence, “Don’t Down Me People” is simple in design, yet passionate in delivery. This blues-funk landmine, previously unreleased in any format, sits at the rarely traversed intersection of the J.B.s and the Band of Gypsys. Stretched over both sides of our latest Eccentric Soul 45, “Don’t Down Me People” contains canyons of wide-open drums, and woozy horns, recalling an intoxicated joyride down Funky Broadway with Dyke and the Blazer’s original timekeeper at the wheel. Vocalist and Arizona Blues Hall of Fame inductee George Bowman trades lead with Rochelle Whitehead Jr., who made his Numero debut on Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg via his Soul Blenders outfit. “Don’t Down Me People” will be available far and wide February 28th. It took us merely five seconds of exposure to this riff to sell us on the song; how long will it take you?

OK, I’ll be the one to ask:
Any chance this will be one of those “and anything else we put out” items added to the 2012 LP subscription?

This is not one of those things. You can use your 15% discount to purchase it cheaper, however.

Feb. 28th. The day of the AZ presidential primary. Where can I buy this?

We’ll have it up on the site in the next few weeks. Revolver and Stinkweeds will surely carry this if you’d prefer to support your local independent retailer.
