Chicago mail order customers might have noticed the inclusion of a take-out menu among their Numero Group items. This was not a gag. This was the truth. We mailed over 100 of these out to Cook County customers because how else do you find out about new restaurants? The Hungry Hound has already weighed in, and the Reader and the Tribune have cosigned. Now Numero feels compelled to inform you that you should probably check out Crazy Bird Chicken at 1138 South California Avenue.
At the site of our dearly departed Treat Yourself, Chicago restauranteur Larry Tucker has dropped anchor behind bullet proof glass to make sandwiches, pot pies, sides, and duck bacon poutine.
He and his wife Ruby are there every single day. Just them two. All day.
Former tenants Treat Yourself used to put this smoker to work. Having earned a reputation as a barbecue master at N.N. Smokehouse and Ditka’s, Larry fires the aquarium up Fridays for rib tips. Today is Friday. This is what we’re eating. Also:
Numero HQ is located at the unfortunate convergence of several food deserts, so when a new restaurant opens, the stakes are incredibly high. We want to see our neighborhood continue to flourish, and feel strongly that supporting independent businesses is an important component.
