Today marks a new beginning for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, who bring Canadian rapper Shadrach Kabango on board to host their internationally syndicated interview show, Q. We get Q here in Chicago via WBEZ, and look forward to hearing this gifted wordsmith do his thing on the ElectroVoice RE-20 Dynamic Cardioid Broadcast Mic. I (Jon Kirby) met Shad through common friends in Spring 2008 because I wanted to talk to him about his excellent rap album The Old Prince for Issue 28 of Wax Poetics. We sustained seven years of friendship through a dozen common friends, a fondness for ’90s R&B, and an obsession with college basketball (plus a mutual disdain for Duke). When a bruised and battered Numero Group rolled through Vancouver on tour this summer, Shad left us keys to his modest Eastside apartment so we could rest and regroup (evident in the photo below). When we heard that Shad was in the running to replace Jian Ghomeshi as the host of Q, we were like, “Who else could it be?” Shad is awesome, his albums are available on vinyl, and he’s humble even when he accepts Canada’s highest rap honor (over Drake’s freshman effort) at the the Juno Awards in 2011. Congratulations Shad! Now where do we send this Numero care package?
